ac motor speed contrl

Hi guys This circuit is for speed control of a motor.

I am stuggling to understand how this circuit works, can someone please assist. 1. What is the function of C1 and L1

  1. Why do we need R3 and C4 to assist in the trigger circuit. I would have thought that only C2 would be good enough for that job.

Thank you

Both of those RC combinations plus the inductor look like snubbers put in to hold down electrical noise. Those "universal" ac series connected commutator motors which are about the only ac motor which would work with this type of control are notorious noise generators. Possibly the original designer ran into problems and found that a bit of noise control helped. --- Back when I worked for a living designing hard wired logic and analog circuits we used snubbers everywhere just to hold down the electrical noise.
