I understand increasing the duty cycle in buck converters increases the output voltage. But what does varying the switching frequency do?

Everything else the same (which is hard to do as frequency increases, as exemple, capacitance of capacitors decreases), increasing the frequency decrease the ripples. Or, if you prefer, at a higher frequency, you may need a lesser inductance. But you cannot increases frequency as you wish, due to many, many, limitations.
