Digital Mux vs. Decoder [edited] SOLVED

Is 3x8 Mux same thing with 8x1 Mux? Also 2x4 mux is same with 4x1 mux?

Hi there. I think you might be confusing the idea of a mux and a decoder. A digital mux will take any of the N input signals and output only one selected signal. A decoder will take an encoded signal over N inputs, and output one unique output. In your nomenclature 3x8 and 2x4 would probably be decoders, and 8x1 and 4x1 are muxes.

If you're clever you can use a decoder (plus some more digital logic gates) to build a mux.
