hi is it possible to add variable speed to a 240v ac single phase induction motor? |

In general, no, it's more trouble than it's worth. I think you'll find commercial single phase variable speed induction motor controllers rectify the single phase to dc then invert the dc to 3 phase ac and use a 3 phase motor. A fundamental problem with the single phase motor is that it must use a starting winding which basically makes it 2 phase to get it moving then a centrifugal switch disconnects the starting winding so that it won't burn out. If you then reduce speed by lowering frequency and voltage the starting winding will be reconnected. |
