Description

Yob is my spirit animal.

I snagged a Black Arts Toneworks Quantum Mystic because of my love for Mike Scheidt and I really enjoyed the vibe of it, but struggled particularly with dialing in the tone control to my liking. I wanted more out of it...and when I want more, it's normally some modification of the mids.

It was a happy accident I acquired a homemade Catalinbread Varioboost pedal from a local builder and popped it in after the Quantum Mystic. Boom, there it was, and off I went on my breadboard journey.

This is what I came up with - modifying part values along the way to dial it in to my liking. The initial version I made was without the active bass and treble control, but experimented with that as an option - I think it works really well both with and without that section. Diode clipping options with a boost compensation for Ge diodes also added.

Mid control is variable from about 150Hz to 2.4Khz with a cut/boost for whatever center frequency is chosen. A lot of options are possible - bass boost, bass cut (treble boost), ~700Hz boost (tubescreamer), ~1KHz boost (Rat), ~1KHz cut (Muff), and anything else you can think of in that range. Adjusting the resistors and capacitors around the dual gang frequency sweep pot and you can dial in different frequency sweep options.
