Summary

2-Voice MOSFET Fuzz Circuit for Electric Guitar

Description

2-voice MOSFET fuzz circuit for electric guitar. Uses two dual JFET-input op-amp ICs for gain, and two dual depletion-mode MOSFET devices for fuzz. The op-amps can also be overdriven to add JFET distortion to the fuzz. The two MOSFET devices are configured to work like diodes; one device with two Schottky diodes in a symmetric soft-clipping feedback array, and the other with one diode in an asymmetric shunt-type hard-clipping array. Controls Include: Fuzz 1 enable switch, Fuzz 1 Gain, Drive, Fuzz 2 enable switch, Fuzz 2 Depth, Level, Tone, and Volume. Range at or above the -3 dBV corners is from 20 Hz to 18 kHz. Suitable for 6/7/8-string guitar or 4/5/6-string bass, with emphasis on mids. Maximum gain = +32.8 dBV @ 400 Hz with all controls at 50%, or up to twice that with all except Tone and Depth controls at 100%. The Fuzz 2 Depth has little effect on gain while the Fuzz 1 Gain has a significant effect on gain and bandwidth. The Tone control has negligible effect when set > 50% but noticible effect when < 50%. The circuit can be used for stomp-box or rackmount projects. The battery can be replaced by a regulated single-polarity +9V DC power-supply providing >= 60 mA of current. And though simulator verified, treat the circuit as experimental. Breadboard test before committing to soldered build.
