Description

3-voice hybrid diode fuzz circuit with 2-band tone. The term "Hybrid" stems from use of both shunt-type and feedback-type diode arrays. Fuzz 1 voice is from standard silicon diodes in a feedback array. Fuzz 2 voice is from LEDs in a separate feedback array. Fuzz 3 voice is from Schottky diodes in a shunt-type array. Controls Include: Input Level, Input Gain, Clean Level (no tone-controls on clean signal), Fuzz Bass, Fuzz Center, Fuzz Treble, Fuzz Drive, Fuzz 1 enable switch, Fuzz 1 symmetry switches, Fuzz 1 Depth, Fuzz Level, Fuzz 2 enable switch, Fuzz 2 symmetry switches, Fuzz 2 Depth, Fuzz Master, and Volume. Op-amps chosen to ensure clean operation overall when all Fuzz effects are off. With no Fuzz enabled, Fuzz circuitry works as 2-stage clean boost with 2-band tone. The Clean Level and Fuzz Master controls allow for mixing to taste of the Clean and Fuzz signals. Bypass switch not included in diagram. Suggest adding bypass switch or using external A/B switch, if desired. Range between low and high -3 dBV corners is from 11.5 Hz to 10 kHz with all controls at 50%, corresponding to range at or above 0 dBV from 13 Hz to 8.3 kHz. Suitable for 6/7/8-string guitar or 4/5/6-string bass. Max Gain = +20.6 dBV @ 1 kHz with all controls at 50%, or > +67 dBV @ 160 Hz with all controls at 100%. This places the circuit in the high-gain fuzz category. Power-supply not shown in the diagram. Requires a regulated dual-polarity supply providing +-15VDC @ >= 60 mA of current. Note: Circuit will also work at +-12VDC or +-9VDC with same current, but noise increases as supply voltage decreases. And while simulator verified, treat the circuit as experimental. Breadboard test it before committing to a soldered build. House in a grounded metal enclosure. Rackmount application recommended.
