RO SpaceGroove Hybrid Distortion-Unit for Electric Guitar
Richter Original "SpaceGroove" hybrid (tube + op-amp) distortion circuit for electric guitar. Controls Include: Input Gain, Diode-Fuzz enable switch, Diode-Fuzz symmetry switches, Diode-Fuzz tone switch, Tube Drive, Tube Bias, Tube Bass, Tube Mid, Tube Treble, Tube Stack-Sum, Tube Attenuation, Tube Level, SSD Gain 1, SSD Gain 2, SSD Bass, SSD Center, SSD Bass, SSD Trim, SSD Level, Output Gain, and Master Volume. [SSD = solid-state distortion.] There are two mixable channels operated together and mixed with separate Level controls. Channel 1 features a 12K5 tetrode tube and Channel 2 features an NJM5532M dual BJT op-amp IC. The tube is overdriven to get real-tube distortion and the NJM5532M is overdriven to get solid-state distortion. The tube is a 12V space-charge type, chosen due to sounding like one triode of a 12AX7 twin-triode tube. The NJM chip is the Japanese version of the NE55332N, and was chosen due to sounding more like a 12AX7 tube than the NE chip, or any other dual op-amp IC. There is also a diode array for getting shunt-type diode fuzz in addition to the two distortion voices, and uses Schottky Diodes. The diode fuzz affects both channels when enabled. Its symmetry switches (SSw) set the harmonic content of the shunt-diode fuzz sound. Overall Frequency Range 20 Hz to 16 kHz with all controls at 50%. Suitable for 6/7/8-string guitar or 4/5/6-string bass. Overall Gain = +20 dBV per channel, adding to >= +40 dBV, with all controls at 50%. Power-supply not shown. Requires a regulated single-polarity DC supply providing +12V @ >= 600 mA. Example: The 12V DC 1000mA (1A) Regulated Switching Power Adapter, Produce ID: 798. 8.95 dollars US. From the AdaFruit website. https://www.AdaFruit.com . The tube is available at The Tube Store, SKU: NOS-12K5. 7.95 dollars US. https://www.thetubestore.com . And while simulator verified, treat the project as experimental. Breadboard test before final soldering.
