MOSFET Fuzz Using Dual Depletion-Mode MOSFET ICs
MOSFET fuzz circuit for electric guitar. Uses two TL082CP dual JFET-input op-amp ICs for gain and drive, and two dual depletion-mode MOSFET ICs configured as shunt-type hard-clipping diodes for fuzz. Depletion-mode MOSFETs have the reputation of sounding more like saturated electron-tubes than enhancement-mode MOSFETs. Controls Include: Direct Drive, Input Tone, Direct Gain, Direct Level, Fuzz Gain, Fuzz Depth, Fuzz Tone, Fuzz Level, and Volume. The Fuzz and the Direct signals are in parallel and are mixed at the output. Frequency Range 40 Hz to 25 kHz with all controls at 50%. Suitable for 6/7-string guitar or 4-string bass. [Not recommended for 8-string guitar or 5/6-string bass.] Maximum Gain = +25.2 dBV @ 1 kHz with all controls at 50%, and up to twice that with all controls at 100%. [Do not use the circuit with all controls at 100% except as a brief worst-case scenario while breadboard testing.] Tone controls pull high cutoff to 4 kHz when both are 0%, which also slightly reduces maximum gain. The circuit can be used for stomp-box or rackmount projects. The batteries can be replaced by a regulated dual-polarity +-9V DC power-supply providing >= 60 mA of current. And though simulator verified, treat the circuit as experimental. Breadboard test before committing to a soldered build. House is a grounded metal enclosure.
