Summary

Overdrive Circuit with Distorted Octave

Description

Overdrive circuit with distorted octave. The direct signal is mixable with the octave effect. No tone-controls. This circuit should be followed by a separate tone-control circuit (not shown). Controls Include: Direct Send, Octave Gain, Octave high cutoff selector switch, Octave Sens (Sensitivity), Octave Send, Output Gain, and Volume. The Input Stage is merely a gain stage whose output goes to the octave circuitry and to the summing-amp. The octave circuitry uses a comparator to convert the direct sine-wave into a square-wave, which is converted to a triangle-wave by an integrator, whose signal is converted back into a square-wave by another comparator but 180-degrees out of phase with the first square-wave. The two square-waves are then converted into triangle-waves by two differentiators whose output signals are mixed in the summing amp together with the direct signal. The circuit is suitable for stomp-box or rackmount applications. The batteries can be replaced by a regulated dual-polarity DC supply providing +-9VDC or +-12VDC or +-15VDC at >= 80 mA of current. The frequency range is from 40 Hz to >> 20 kHz with all controls at 50%, but which expands in both directions with all controls at 100%. Moderately high gain circuit. Maximum gain = +23 dBV @ 1 kHz with all controls at 50%, or twice that with all controls at 100%. And though simulator verified, treat the circuit as experimental. Breadboard test before soldering.
