Summary

Distortion Circuit for Guitar with 2 Gain Stages and 2-Band Tone

Description

Distortion circuit for 6-string electric guitar. Includes two stages of gain, one clean and one for distortion, and a 2-band active James-style tone-control. Uses one dual FET-input op-amp IC for clean boost and one dual BJT op-amp for distortion and active tone. Controls Include: Drive, Gain 1, Level 1, Gain 2, Level 2, Bass, Treble, and Volume. The 0 dBV low corner is 51 Hz. Range between low and high 0 dBV corners is from there to 10 kHz, with 20 kHz down by -12 dBV. Ideal for 6-string electric guitar in standard tuning. Maximum gain = +22 dBV (Vo/Vi = 12.6) @ 400 Hz with all controls at 50%, or +61 dBV (Vo/Vi = 1122) @ 1 kHz with all controls at 100%. The Treble control cuts 10 kHz down to -6.4 dBV or boosts it to +5 dBV, while the Bass control cuts 100 Hz down to +3.7 dBV or boosts it to +20 dBV. The Mids are fixed. Power-supply not shown. Requires a regulated dual-polarity DC supply providing +-9VDC or +-12VDC or +-15VDC at >= 30 mA of current. And while simulator verified, treat the circuit as experimental. That is, breadboard test before committing to a soldered build.
