Summary

Highly-Modified Colorsound "Tone Bender" MK-II-RI

Description

Highly-modified Colorsound MK-II-RI Tone Bender fuzz circuit. Controls Include: Input Gain, Attack, Drive, Output Gain, and Volume. No tone controls. Subcircuit involving the discrete transistors is the Tone Bender circuit proper, while the op-amps were added to increase the overall gain. The frequency range between the low and high -3 dBV corners is from 9.6 Hz to 25 kHz. Suitable for 6/7/8-string guitar or 4/5/6-string bass. Maximum gain = +22 dBV between 400 Hz and 1 kHz with all controls at 50%, or +48 dBV from 630 Hz to 6.3 kHz with all controls at 100%, at which bandwidth extends from 16 Hz to >> 20 kHz. Fuzz sound should be the same as that of the vintage pedal but with much more gain. The op-amps were chosen to ensure clean operation of the circuit, except when the transistors are overdriven. Circuit is suitable for stomp-box applications, but the battery can be replaced by a regulated single-polarity +9VDC supply providing >= 40 mA of current. And though simulator verified, treat the circuit as experimental. Breadboard test it before committing to a soldered build. And house in a grounded metal enclosure.
