The BBC OBA9 audio gain control (circa 1952). Using a linear pot it gets nearly logarithmic gain. Since it is a non-inverting circuit the minimum gain is 1, but if you need an attenuator that goes all the way to 0, you can do the same thing in the inverting configuration. The circuit has the additional benefit that the pot wiper is between the op-amp output and the circuit output, and inside the feedback loop, so noise from dirty pots will be dramatically reduced.
