Compander Fuzz Circuit with 3 Fuzz Voices and 3-Band Tone
Compander fuzz circuit with 3 interactive fuzz voices and 3-band tone. The term "Compander" means compressor plus expander using diodes. Circuit as-is uses two dual JFET-input op-amp ICs with one op-amp as the input gain-stage, one as the direct-signal driver, one as the fuzz-section driver, and one for the tone stage. Controls Include: Input Gain, Direct Drive, Direct Send, Fuzz 1 enable switch, Fuzz 1 symmetry switches (two, with 2 settings each), Fuzz 1 Trim, Fuzz 2 enable switch, Fuzz 2 symmetry switches (two, with 2 settings each), Fuzz 2 Depth, Fuzz 3 enable switch, Fuzz 3 symmetry switches (two, with 2 settings each), Fuzz 3 Trim, Bass, Mid, Treble, and Volume. The fuzz voices are: Fuzz 1 is from soft-clipping Schottky diodes, and Fuzz 2 is from hard-clipping germanium diodes, while Fuzz 3 is from standard silicon diodes in the signal-path. Symmetry switches in each diode array set harmonic content of the fuzz. If fuzz is not used, the Fuzz Driver becomes a signal booster in parallel with the Direct Driver. Frequency range is from 60 Hz to 20 kHz with all controls at 50%. Circuit is intended for 6-string electric guitar in standard tuning (not recommended for 7/8-string guitars or bass-guitars). Max gain = +30 dBV @ 1 kHz with all controls 50%, or +55 dBV @ 400 Hz with all controls 100%, and which expands the bandwidth; from 25 Hz to 63 kHz. Circuit is suitable for stomp-box or rack-mount projects; rack-mountiung is suggested. Power-supply not shown. Requires regulated dual-polarity DC supply providing one of the following: +-9VDC or +-12VDC or +-15VDC at >= 25 mA of current. While circuit is simulator verified, it should be considered experimental. Breadboard test before committing to a soldered build.
