Summary

High-Gain MOSFET Fuzz Circuit For Guitar

Description

High-gain MOSFET fuzz circuit for guitar. Uses two TL082CP dual JFET-input op-amp ICs for gain and drive, and two dual depletion-mode MOSFET ICs configured as hard-clipping diodes for obtaining fuzz. Depletion-mode MOSFETs have the reputation of sounding more like saturated electron-tubes than enhancement-mode MOSFETs. Controls Include: Direct Send, Input Tone, Direct Gain, Direct Level, Fuzz Gain, Fuzz Depth, Fuzz Tone, Fuzz Level, and Volume. The Fuzz and the Direct signals are in parallel and are mixed at the Output. Suitable for stomp-box or rack-mount applications. The batteries can be replaced by a regulated dual-polarity +-9V DC power-supply providing >= 30 mA of current. The range is from < 40 Hz to > 20 kHz. Circuit is good for 6/7/8-string guitar or 4/5/6-string bass, but with emphasis on upper-mids and highs above 250 Hz. Maximum gain = +31.4 dBV from 2.5 kHz and above with all controls at 50%, or +55 dBV from 400 Hz and above with all controls at 100%, except for Fuzz Depth and both Tone controls remaining at 50%. Fuzz Depth has little effect on gain, and the two Tone controls have little or no effect when set >= 50%, but have significant effects both on bandwidth and gain when set < 50%, with the most dramatic effect when both are at 0%.
