Summary

Preamp with Booster + Fuzz + 3-Band Tone

Description

Guitar preamp with bass boost, diode fuzz, and 3-band tone. Controls Include: Drive 1, Boost enable switch, Boost level, Bass, Mid, Treble, Tone Gain, Drive 2, Fuzz enable switch, Fuzz symmetry switches (two, with two settings each), Fuzz Depth, and Volume. The Buffer, Boost, and Output stages are based on separate designs by Craig Anderton, though highly modified. The Tone Stage is based on a well-known, but modified, active Baxandall tone circuit with added mid-control. Modifications include adding of extra controls and the adjustment of part-values for obtaining an acceptable frequency-response curve. Range at or above 0 dBV is from 52 Hz to 25 kHz. Ideal for 6-string electric guitar in standard tuning (not for 7/8-string guitar or bass-guitar). Maximum gain = +19 dBV @ 3.3 kHz with all controls at 50%, and no Boost or Fuzz. Maximum gain = +66.8 dBV @ 815 Hz with all controls at 100% and Boost + Fuzz ON. Power-supply not shown. Requires a regulated dual-polarity DC supply providing +-9VDC or +-12VDC or +-15VDC at >= 40 mA of current. And though based on proven subcircuits, while the overall design has been simulator verified, treat it as experimental in nature. Breadboard test it before committing to a soldered build.
